A lot of people are surprised to find cockroaches in Missoula. Montana's cold keeps them from living outdoors, but that doesn't protect a heated building. Cockroaches arrive indoors, usually as hitchhikers, and once they're in, a warm kitchen or bathroom gives them everything they need all year.

The cockroach most people find indoors is the German cockroach: small, light brown, with two dark stripes behind the head. It's an indoor pest that spreads almost entirely by hitchhiking.

• Luggage and moving boxes
• Shared walls, pipes and wiring in apartments and connected buildings

Once inside, cockroaches head for warmth, moisture and food. Kitchens and bathrooms are favorites, especially behind refrigerators, stoves and dishwashers, under sinks and inside cabinets. They breed quickly, so a few can become a real problem in a matter of weeks. That's why it pays to call early rather than wait to see if they go away.

Before the visit, Brian will tell you what to do for your treatment. Usually that means clearing out the cupboards under sinks, putting food away and making it easy to reach behind the fridge and stove.

After treatment, keep counters and floors clean, fix drips and leaks, and store food sealed. You may see some roaches for a while as the treatment works. Call if they're still active after the time Brian gave you.
