Wasp, Hornet & Yellowjacket Removal in Missoula

Every summer in Missoula, wasps and yellowjackets build nests in the worst possible places. A nest under the eaves, a steady stream of yellowjackets from a hole in the lawn, or a paper hornet nest in a tree can take over a backyard fast. Stings hurt, some people react badly to them, and a nest in a wall can do damage.

Most "wasps" around Missoula are one of three kinds, and they behave differently.

• Yellowjackets are the ones that crash picnics. They often nest in the ground or inside walls, and their colonies grow all summer, peaking in late summer and fall. That's when they're most defensive and most interested in your food.
• Paper wasps build open, umbrella-shaped nests you can see the cells of, usually under eaves, railings and deck boards. They're less aggressive, but a nest by a door still means stings.
• Bald-faced hornets build the big, closed, gray football-shaped nests in trees and shrubs. They defend them hard.

One warning for nests in a wall: don't plug the hole. Yellowjackets that can't get out the usual way can chew their way inward and end up inside the house. Leave it open, keep people away, and call.

Nests are easiest to deal with early in the season while they're small, and a spring queen building under your eaves is a lot less trouble in May than a full colony in August.

Before Brian arrives, keep kids and pets away from the nest area and don't try to knock it down or spray it yourself. Don't plug any holes wasps are using. If you can, note where they're going in and out.

After treatment you may see some activity for a short time as returning wasps come back to the nest. Keep your distance, follow Brian's advice on when the area is safe, and call if activity keeps up.
